Nutella French Toast with Fresh Strawberry Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced (about 3 cups)
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 4 extra thick slices of bread (Italian, French or Challah all work well)
  • Nutella (approximately ½ cup)
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 Tablespoon canola oil
  • Optional: Powdered Sugar

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, combine strawberries, sugar and orange juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes.
  2. While the sauce is cooking, carefully cut a slit into each slice of bread, creating a pocket (be careful not to cut all the way through).
  3. Spread a very generous spoonful of Nutella into each pocket.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and salt.
  5. Dip the stuffed bread in the egg mixture, making sure it is well coated on all sides.
  6. In a large skillet, heat butter and oil over medium heat. Add the soaked bread (making sure not to crowd the skillet), and cook for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until lightly golden brown on both sides. (If cooking the slices in batches, add a little more butter and oil after the first round.)
  7. Remove onto serving plates, and top with the strawberry sauce. Serve immediately.
  8. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar.
